2018: VMC in Calgary & St John’s
Unprecedented Travel Plans
Never before has the VMC had such a wonderful opportunity in the same year to travel across the country and represent our beautiful city at two of Canada’s most prestigious national choral events.
What a journey the VMC is on! Now in its 37th season, and with a solid track record of contributions to the arts communities within Canada, USA and abroad, we are so honoured to have been invited to the Choral Canada “Podium: On The Edge” festival in 2018. This puts the VMC on the national mainstage of Canadian choral music, and is a tremendous testament to the years of dedication, perseverance, and hard work that many hundreds of people have contributed to the continued success of the VMC over the years.
In addition, our attendance at the Unison LGBTQI2+ Choral Festival every 4 years is always hotly anticipated, and expected. The VMC were pioneers all those years ago back in 1981, as the first gay chorus in Canada. At Unison, we celebrate such achievements in song with our LGBTQI2+ brothers and sisters from across our great nation.
Sending the VMC, with a thriving membership of over 100 guys, to Calgary and St John’s, is an expensive venture. The budget for each man to represent Vancouver at both events is around $1,900. Please consider helping us financially, and receive a tax receipt in return for your generous support.
UNISON LGBTQI2+ Choral Festival, Calgary, AB
Dates: May 18 to 21, 2018
Canada’s national Unison/Unisson Festival (Unison), the quadrennial gathering of Canada’s LGBTQI2+ choirs, has been a cornerstone of the Vancouver Men’s Chorus’s performance and organizational calendar since 1998, when the inaugural festival was held in Edmonton. Since then, the VMC have sung at Unison in Toronto (2002), Vancouver (2006, as co-hosts), Winnipeg (2010), and Ottawa (2014), closing the festival each time as the grandfather of all of Canada’s LGBTQI2+ choruses.
As Canada’s first gay men’s chorus, the Vancouver Men’s Chorus has played a key role in inspiring and mentoring Canada’s LGBTQI2+ choral movement since 1981. In this role, the VMC leads by example and is widely respected for its fine musicianship and organizational strength.
PODIUM Choral Festival, St John’s, NL
Dates: June 29 to July 3, 2018
The VMC has been honoured with an invitation to perform on PODIUM’s national stage as a spotlight choir for the upcoming PODIUM conference in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, July 2, 2018.
This will be the first time in the history of this national organization that an openly gay men’s chorus will perform. The conference organizers are very deliberate in their invitations, selecting the VMC specifically to represent the gay men’s choral movement in this country. The theme of PODIUM 2018 is “On The Edge” – very fitting, of course, because of its situation in St. John’s, but also very forward looking from a programming perspective. To realize the PODIUM 2018 theme, a performance by Canada’s leading edge gay men’s chorus is absolutely on point. The Vancouver Men’s Chorus was selected for PODIUM 2018 by a national team of choral professionals, who take into account current and past artistic achievements of the VMC.
We Need Your Help
Outreach events such as Unison and Podium are a vital component of the VMC’s mandate. To this end, the chorus has been diligently saving money, fundraising, and grant-writing to help each and every chorus member with a substantial subsidy towards the $1,900 budget for expenses for flights, accommodation, registration fees, and subsistence.
Are you able to help support these outreach programs? A donation to the VMC would help to sponsor an individual and boost the subsidy. You will receive a tax receipt for qualifying donations. Please visit our donations page for more information.
Thank you for your continued support of the Vancouver Men’s Chorus. We always look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming performances.
